Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx)

CILEX (The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) is one of the three main professional bodies covering the legal profession in England and Wales. The 20,000-strong membership is made up of CILEX Lawyers, paralegals and other legal professionals.

For more than fifty years CILEX has offered a unique route to a legal career and pioneered the non-university route into law. The CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), launched in 2021, offers a new approach to on-the-job training that combines legal knowledge with the practical skills, behaviours and commercial awareness needed by lawyers in the 2020s.

The CPQ provides three levels of qualification: CILEX Lawyer, CILEX Advanced Paralegal and CILEX Paralegal.

There are no formal entry requirements to study CILEX qualifications and there are legal services apprenticeships options available. There are two legal services apprenticeship pathways – Paralegal and Chartered Legal Executive (CLE).   On completion of an apprenticeship in legal services, students can go on to study further CILEX qualifications to become CILEX Lawyers.

CILEX Lawyers are specialists in one or two areas of the law and can become partners in law firms, coroners, advocates and judges.
