Hi, I am Lula Mealey, a quantity surveyor apprentice at BAM Nuttall.
I chose to go down the degree apprenticeship route as it offered the best opportunities to start my career as a quantity surveyor. A degree apprenticeship offers the advantage of gaining experience and knowledge at the same time, the learning is practical and quickly applied to your work.
BAM is the perfect company to start a career in construction at. They have support in place for every stage of your journey through the apprenticeship, whether you’re in the office, on-site or in college – there is always someone to help! This has allowed for me to succeed in my first two years in my apprenticeship with completing my EPA.
BAM also has an extensive network of apprentices through the company and offers great networking events with apprentices nationally and internationally.
Being a quantity surveyor apprentice means you get a good balance of being between the office and on site. I am currently working on three different sites in and around London which allows for every day to be different.
What I enjoy most about being a quantity surveyor is how collaborative it is; you are constantly working and socialising with new people on projects. After finishing my degree, I would like to become a chartered surveyor and work on projects overseas, as there are endless global career opportunities for a QS.
For anyone who is considering a career in construction, I would advise them to research the different roles available in the industry. There are a variety of different roles in construction that you can start your career with at BAM.
