Apprenticeships to consider if your favourite subject is geography

If you have a passion for geography in your current studies and hope to expand this interest as a career, there are plenty of options open to you.

If your favourite subject is geography and you are thinking of pursuing it, there is a broad range of careers open to you. You could seek work in the private or public sector, or a charity connected to housing, town planning, land management, conservation or international development, or even train to teach.

Within your apprenticeship you could develop skills in data, research, scientific and map skills, as well as teamwork, communication and time management.

Here is a selection of apprenticeships on offer that all have a focus on the subject of geography.

Air traffic controller: You’ll direct aircraft, both on the ground and through controlled airspace. The duration is 15 months and you will achieve a level 5 apprenticeship upon completion.

Archaeological specialist: Plan, undertake and lead archaeological research and investigations. The duration is 36 months and you will achieve a level 7 degree apprenticeship upon completion.

Chartered town planner: You will deal with official regulations, policy documents and master plans for changing, improving, reusing or conserving buildings and sites. The duration is 60 months and you will achieve a level 7 degree apprenticeship upon completion.

Environmental health practitioner: You’ll enable people to live and work in a safe and healthy environment. The duration is 48 months and you will achieve a level 6 apprenticeship upon completion. 

Forest operative: The management of trees, plants and the environment in forests and woodlands. The duration is 24 months and you will achieve a level 2 apprenticeship upon completion. 

Geospatial survey technician: You’ll gather geographic data for use in the creation of maps, satnavs and GPS. The duration is 24 months and you will achieve a level 3 apprenticeship upon completion. 

Landscape technician: You will support landscape professionals in designing, planning and managing spaces. The duration is 24 months and you will achieve a level 3 apprenticeship.

Port marine operations officer: Assisting in the safe transit and handling of vessels into and out of the port. The duration is 24 months and you will achieve a level 4 apprenticeship upon completion.

Sustainability business specialist: You will find new and innovative approaches to help companies manage their resources used and waste generated. The duration is 24 months and you will achieve a level 7 apprenticeship upon completion. 

Travel consultant: Making travel arrangements and book accommodation and other services. The duration is 12 months and you will achieve a level 3 apprenticeship upon completion.
