Support the operation of a farm
During the general farm worker apprenticeship you’ll support the operation of farm enterprises by maintaining crops, animal handling and the maintenance and cleanliness of machinery. You’ll be expected to drive farm vehicles, so must hold the appropriate licence. Typical work may include identifying and maintaining animal or plant health and welfare, conducting routine tasks and assisting with general record keeping. You could specialise in livestock or crop and will work alongside a line manager, and people external to the farm, such as vets, contractors and consultants. Your working hours will depend on the type of farm, but you’ll be expected to work long hours and in all weather conditions. Other job titles could include general farm operative, shepherd, stockperson and tractor driver.
