
Make sewn products that meet specifications and quality criteria
A sewing machinist can be employed by a large, small or micro sewn product manufacturing business. These businesses produce a range and variety of products, from clothing and fashion items to leather goods, soft furnishing, knitwear, marine and medical textiles. In this role, you’ll be fundamental to the production process. Depending on the product and company size, you may work alone or as part of a team on one aspect within the sewing process, or on various operations. During the sewing machinist apprenticeship you could train in lockstitching, blind hemming, overlocking, cover stitch, cup seaming, ruffling or linking. Your key responsibility will be to make sewn products that meet specifications and quality criteria, with particular emphasis on maintaining quality standards while working at the required efficiency rate and meeting targets and deadlines.

Entry requirements for the sewing machinist apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience
Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs at grades A* to C
Potential salary upon completion: £21,000 per annum
