A facilities services operative can provide security, support maintenance and engineering, and carry out cleaning, catering, front-of-house logistics, post-room services and portering. It’s a broad ranging job that can be undertaken in a number of environments, from commercial properties to hospitals. As an apprentice, you’ll increasingly collaborate with technical experts and other related roles, such as security personnel, cleaners, catering and front-of-house staff. You may work alone in a small enterprise or in teams of up to anything from 30 to 500 people in a large-scale operation, depending on the size of the contract. The role is usually fulfilled working Monday to Friday and night working is rarely involved.

Relevant school subjects: Business studies

Entry requirements: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £21,000 per annum
