Spencer Group, an engineering firm based in Hull in East Yorkshire, has strengthened its mechanical and electrical (M&E) team by welcoming four new apprentices, continuing its long-standing partnership with Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC).
Among the new recruits are Mason Creighton and Johnny Reilly, both joining as level 3 electrical apprentices. They will play a key role within Spencer Group’s M&E team, which supports various projects across sectors including rail, bridge maintenance, and civil engineering.
The apprentices will gain hands-on experience and learn from industry experts, ready to meet the complex demands of future employers.
Mason, 18, expressed his enthusiasm for the apprenticeship route: “After seeing my dad work as a contractor on building sites, I knew I wanted to learn a trade. I chose Spencer Group because of the wide variety of interesting projects and the opportunity to gain further qualifications.
Two additional apprentices, Michael Ward and Dylan McCallion, have joined Spencer Group to pursue their level 4 HNC civil engineer and technician qualifications. Dylan, also 18, commented on his decision to pursue an apprenticeship: “I learn better through practical experience, and Spencer Group’s range of projects across the UK attracted me. I’m excited about the chance to work in different departments and travel around the country.”
This apprenticeship programme builds on the success of previous apprentices like Dan Whittle, now operations director at Spencer Group. Having started his career as an apprentice electrician in 2006, Dan worked his way up through the ranks, gaining numerous qualifications along the way.
“Spencer Group has always supported me in pushing my boundaries and providing career progression opportunities,” Dan said. “It’s great to see these new apprentices starting in the same way I did almost 20 years ago.”
The partnership between Spencer Group and Ron Dearing UTC remains important in developing local talent. The college, which focuses on employer-led education, has helped over 50 students secure full-time positions at Spencer Group in various disciplines including engineering, project management, and IT.
Spencer Group’s HR Director, Yvonne Moir, expressed her excitement about the new intake: “We’re thrilled to welcome our new apprentices. Ron Dearing UTC continues to provide us with highly skilled young people who are well-prepared for the workplace. We look forward to seeing them thrive.”
