“I was initially attracted to AstraZeneca’s commitment to putting patients first and their genuine dedication to following the science, making it clear that this organisation truly cared about the impact of its work. Being based in Cambridge, a global hub for scientific innovation, was also a major draw, as it provided an opportunity to immerse myself in a vibrant network of scientists and researchers.
So far during my time at AstraZeneca, I have contributed to a variety of projects. One of my main responsibilities has participating in research for cancer treatmentsbeen generating in vitro data for a project investigating how immunotherapy cancer drugs affect the ability of T cells to kill cancer cells. Alongside this, I support colleagues in my department by running experiments to assist their projects, gaining more skills in a variety of lab techniques. This work has allowed me
to gain hands-on experience while being directly involved in advancing cancer research.
Outside the lab, I’ve also enjoyed taking an active role in the AstraZeneca community, such as helping to organise an early talent summer formal.
Through my experiences at AstraZeneca, I’ve become significantly more organised and confident when presenting both scientific and non-scientific data. My technical expertise, especially within immunology, has grown thanks to extensive laboratory work and specialist training such as an external flow cytometry course. On a personal level, moving to a new city and learning to live independently has helped me develop essential life skills beyond the workplace.
Choosing an apprenticeship over the traditional university route was driven by the idea of developing my career without incurring student loans, as well as entering the corporate world to see firsthand how scientific learning directly translates into meaningful work. At AstraZeneca, I am surrounded by experts willing to share their knowledge, which means I can ask questions freely and learn at a pace and depth unmatched by a purely academic setting. My apprenticeship has allowed me to build a strong foundation in my field, explore different aspects of working in a global company, and gain practical experience that will shape my future career in science.”
