Install and maintain piping systems on ships and submarines
As a maritime pipeworker apprentice, you’ll learn how to fabricate, install, and test pipework systems used on vessels such as ships and submarines. These systems carry fluids and gases used for everything from water and fuel to hydraulics and fire suppression.
During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain skills in measuring, cutting, bending, welding, and assembling pipes made from materials like steel, copper, and plastic. You’ll learn to read technical drawings, use specialist tools and machinery, and follow safety and quality procedures in line with maritime standards.
You’ll need to be precise, practical, and safety-focused. You’ll often work in confined spaces and at height, both in shipyards and on board vessels.
With experience, you could move into advanced pipefitting, supervisory roles, or specialise in high-integrity systems used in defence and offshore industries.
