Install and maintain mechanical systems on ships and submarines
As a maritime mechanical fitter apprentice, you’ll learn how to build, install, maintain, and repair mechanical parts and systems found on vessels such as ships, boats, and submarines. These systems might include engines, pumps, gearboxes, steering mechanisms, and ventilation units.
During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop skills in using hand and power tools, reading engineering drawings, assembling components, and aligning mechanical systems to precise standards. You’ll work with a variety of metals and materials and follow strict health, safety, and environmental rules.
You’ll need strong practical skills, good problem-solving ability, and a focus on accuracy and teamwork. This role often takes place in docks, shipyards, and confined spaces, sometimes offshore or at sea.
With experience, you could move into supervisory roles, specialise in high-integrity mechanical systems, or progress to engineering technician or project leadership positions.
