Fit, adjust and remove braces to help patients improve the position of their teeth
Working in dental healthcare, you’ll support patients who are having orthodontic treatment to improve the position, alignment and appearance of their teeth. Orthodontic therapists usually work in dental practices, orthodontic clinics, hospitals or community dental services as part of a wider dental team. During the orthodontic therapist apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to carry out orthodontic procedures under the prescription of an orthodontist or dentist. In your day-to-day work, you may bond brackets onto teeth, fit and change wires, take impressions, fit removable appliances and retainers, take scans or radiographs, make appliances safe and give patients advice about looking after their teeth and braces. You’ll work with patients of different ages, as well as parents, guardians, carers and other dental professionals. You’ll need to communicate clearly, gain consent, keep accurate records, follow infection control procedures and work within professional and legal guidelines. This role suits someone who is caring, practical, calm under pressure and interested in oral health, patient care and dental science.
