We’re a Russell Group university with a proud history of offering a range of excellent higher and degree apprenticeships. Since 2012 we’ve supported more than 3,400 people to start apprenticeships in engineering and healthcare nationwide.

We work closely with industry partners across the UK to develop and deliver apprenticeship programmes that meet the needs of the current and future workforce. Whether its advanced manufacturing in Worcester or speech and language therapy in Brighton, we’re creating opportunities for apprentices to learn, earn and make an impact in sectors of national importance (Government’s Industrial Strategy).

AMRC Training Centre University of SheffieldAt the AMRC Training Centre this means creating a new generation of engineers skilled in welding, automation and controls engineering, composites, toolmaking, mechanical manufacture and nuclear manufacturing. In an economic impact assessment report of the AMRC Training Centre by KADA, over a 15 year period, apprentices who completed their apprenticeships between 2018/19 and 2022/23 will contribute £46M of productivity benefits to the UK economy.

Within the School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery, our apprentices are making a major contribution to frontline NHS services across nursing, speech and language therapy and advanced practice. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 92% of the University’s research and impact was assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent, and our apprentices draw on this pioneering health research to deliver better outcomes for patients.University of Sheffield - Nursing Skills

As well as meeting the needs of industry and the NHS workforce, our apprenticeships are an accessible way for people to launch or develop their careers in these fields. Apprentices come to the University from all stages and walks of life – whether they’re just joining the workforce, upskilling, or exploring a new field.

Throughout their studies, our apprentices can access University support services such as counselling and mental health support, our 301: Academic Skills Centre, and specialist disability and dyslexia support. Apprentices who visit us from further afield stay in our student accommodation during study blocks, returning to their employers ready to put their new learning into practice.

With an Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ and an achievement rate of 80.9% (2023/24) – in the top 12% of the total 1,107 apprenticeship provider rates – the University of Sheffield sets apprentices up for rewarding and successful careers in their desired field. Our approach is underpinned by our golden thread: Independent thinking. Shared ambition. This ethos ensures that every apprentice not only gains expertise in their chosen field, but also develops the critical thinking and collaborative spirit needed to drive innovation, shape their industries, and make a lasting contribution to society.
