British Sugar: Liam Walpole

Liam Walpole is a process technician apprentice at British Sugar

Liam previously worked as a trainee project engineer for an oil and gas company. He completed A-levels in maths and physics, as well as a level 3 BTEC in engineering. Why did he opt for an apprenticeship? He said: “I chose to complete an apprenticeship with British Sugar because the programme seemed well structured with various different areas in which to progress. I also preferred a more hands-on role over an office job.”

Of the apprenticeship process, he said: “Our learning has primarily been at college in Middlesbrough. We have learnt snippets of the process of making sugar, but mainly about all the equipment used in the process and where it is used.”

“I found the course content at TTE to be very relatable to our job roles at the factories and the teaching for the level 3 0610 exams was excellent. I also couldn’t fault the accommodation in Hartlepool. The flats were modern, finished well and they were equipped with all the essentials.”

Liam concluded: “The best moment of the scheme so far has been returning to site and applying all the knowledge I gained from the course at TTE. Prior to completing the college course, I was unsure about many things, but learning at TTE gave me a much better understanding of the equipment and process at the factory.”
