Virgin Media: Tom Williams

Tom Williams, 20, is a Virgin Media network engineer apprentice

Tom was recently awarded ‘Learner of the Month’ by trainers of his level 4 network engineer apprenticeship with Virgin Media, for successfully completing every test and practical exam in his first nine months on the scheme and becoming the first in his group to pass the professional qualification.

He said: “I’ve always been interested in IT; in school, I built my own computer and I’ve always kept up to date with the latest technology and gadgets, so when I found the networking engineering apprenticeship, I was drawn to it immediately.”

Each day, Tom is learning new theoretical and practical skills that help him engage in design discussions with his own engineering team and the wider company. He’s been learning about new network protocols and technologies and apply those learnings to his ongoing projects.

With learning blocks away from the day-to-day apprenticeship role, Tom said: “It helps me focus on the training and get into a learning mindset without distraction. The training weeks have helped me compound the knowledge that I’m gaining each day at work, with a mix of theory and practical”.

Tom says that after he completes his apprenticeship he hopes to “develop from my network engineer role to become a principal engineer, taking on more responsibility and leading projects and hopefully one day work internationally”.
