Costs lawyer apprenticeship

Support legal teams by advising on and managing legal costs and funding

As a costs lawyer apprentice, you’ll learn how to guide clients through costs budgeting, recovery, and dispute resolution. Under supervision, you’ll support solicitors, courts, and clients by calculating and negotiating legal costs, drafting bills, and preparing settlement offers.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain knowledge of civil procedure rules, litigation costs, legal aid, contract and tort law, and professional ethics. You’ll develop skills in cost assessment, budgeting, drafting legal documents, and negotiating disputes. You’ll also learn how to use digital tools, manage confidential information, and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.

You’ll need strong analytical and organisational skills, as well as attention to detail and confidence in handling legal and financial matters. This role suits someone who is methodical, ethical, and committed to supporting the justice system.

With experience, you could progress into senior roles within law firms, specialise in complex litigation, or train future costs professionals. You’ll also be eligible to apply for a practising certificate, which allows you to conduct litigation and represent clients in court on costs matters.
