Diagnostic radiographer apprenticeship

Obtain images of high diagnostic quality using a range of complex imaging equipment

During the diagnostic radiographer apprenticeship, you’ll work with a range of high-cost and complex imaging equipment. This will include imaging using X-rays and cross-sectional imaging methods (computed tomography or CT), fluoroscopy and interventional radiology. You’ll also assist in other imaging modalities such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), breast imaging and nuclear medicine. You’ll work independently with a broad range of patients, to assess, authorise, obtain consent and undertake individual examination requests for radiography procedures. You’ll be responsible for the safe use of imaging equipment and the safe conduct of examinations, including radiation protection. You’ll then critique images and determine appropriate actions. The work is physically and mentally demanding, done over variable shift patterns, and involves direct patient contact, which can be of a personal nature. You’ll be able to work in diagnostic imaging departments in hospitals, but also provide mobile imaging on wards.

Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Degree)—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree

Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
