Embalmer apprenticeship

Prepare and preserve bodies for funerals and viewings with care and professionalism

As an embalmer apprentice, you’ll learn how to prepare deceased bodies through embalming techniques that delay decomposition, allowing families to hold funerals and viewings in a dignified way. You’ll work closely with funeral directors and families to provide compassionate support.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain skills in disinfecting and preserving bodies using chemicals, restoring appearance, and maintaining high standards of hygiene and respect. You’ll follow strict health, safety, and environmental regulations, working in controlled conditions.

You’ll need empathy, attention to detail, and professionalism. The role requires sensitivity to grieving families and the ability to work calmly under emotional and sometimes challenging circumstances.

With experience, you could become a senior embalmer, trainer, or progress into funeral directing or management.

Duration: 24 months
Relevant school subjects: Science, health and social care
Entry requirements: Level 2 English and maths; employers may set additional entry requirements
Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced) – equivalent to two A-levels
Potential salary upon completion: £22,000–£28,000 per annum
