Heat network maintenance technician apprenticeship

Maintain and repair low-carbon heat networks that supply homes and buildings

As a heat network maintenance technician apprentice, you’ll learn how to service and repair the systems that distribute heat from a central energy source to multiple buildings or homes. These systems help provide low-carbon heating and hot water through underground pipe networks, often used in city centres or large housing developments.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop skills in inspecting and maintaining pumps, valves, meters, and control systems. You’ll learn how to diagnose faults, carry out routine servicing, and ensure the safe and efficient running of the network. You’ll also work with health and safety rules and environmental standards.

You’ll need good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. This is a practical role that often involves working in plant rooms, underground ducts, or outdoors in all weather.

With experience, you could move into supervisory roles, specialise in low-carbon technologies, or become a heat network engineer.
