Lead baker apprenticeship

Plan, prepare and produce a significant range of refined baked products.

Put your tastebuds to the test in the leader baker apprenticeship – this role is based in bakeries or food development labs where they create new bakery items. As a leader baker apprentice, you might work in craft bakeries, factory-scale production bakeries, hotels, or restaurants. Your main responsibilities will be to plan, make, and improve bakery products like sourdough, complex pastry and biscuit products, and cake products. To succeed in this apprenticeship, you’ll need to know a lot about recipes, complex processing methods, and specialised ingredients. During the lead baker apprenticeship, you’ll collaborate with your team, your managers, suppliers, and sometimes customers or external proprietors. You’ll make sure that everything is done safely and to the highest possible standard. You might also help with coming up with new ideas, improving processes, and training others. Upon completion of the lead baker apprenticeship, you could become an NPD test bakery leader, head baker, or product development technician. 

 

Duration: 24 months  

Relevant school subjects: Food technology 

Entry requirements for the lead baker apprenticeship: Varies by employer, but likely GCSEs or a level 2 qualification in food production or processing. 

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels 

Potential salary upon completion: £28,000
