Operate specialised mammography equipment to screen people for breast cancer
Mammography utilises x-ray imaging to screen breasts within a hospital or in a community setting, such as a mobile breast screening unit or a medical centre. Working under the supervision of a radiographer, you’ll undertake routine mammography on individuals with symptoms of breast disease and will develop a good understanding of breast anatomy, physiology and pathology, including clinical signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and knowledge of ionising radiation regulations. During the mammography associate apprenticeship you’ll learn technical skills in the operation of specialised equipment and will be responsible for monitoring equipment function and performance. You’ll work toward being able to produce images of consistently high quality to meet rigorous NHS Breast Screening Programme standards. You’ll be expected to treat individuals with dignity and respect, adopting an empathic approach, with the courage to challenge any areas of concern. You’ll need excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to providing high-quality care for individuals attending for mammography.
