Maritime electrical fitter apprenticeship

Install and maintain electrical systems on ships and submarines

As a maritime electrical fitter apprentice, you’ll learn how to fit, test, and maintain electrical systems used on marine vessels such as ships and submarines. These systems power everything from lighting and communication equipment to navigation, propulsion, and safety systems.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop skills in reading electrical diagrams, wiring components, testing circuits, diagnosing faults, and ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently. You’ll use specialist tools and follow detailed technical and safety procedures, often working in confined spaces or at height.

You’ll need good attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a strong focus on safety. This hands-on role suits people who enjoy working with electrical systems and want to support the operation of vital maritime equipment.

With experience, you could become a senior technician, specialise in high-integrity or defence systems, or move into electrical engineering and leadership roles.
