Materials science technologist apprenticeship

Ensure that materials are fit for purpose

This role is at the forefront of materials innovation, you’ll ensure that materials used in those industries are fit for purpose in terms of product innovation, performance, failure diagnosis, operational management, process and manufacturing. You’ll engage in high level activities such as materials testing, novel product development, solving manufacturing issues, laboratory management, team leadership, technological sales, and client management. Your work will involve testing materials used by clients through activities such as investigation, gathering physical evidence, critical analyses, drawing conclusions, and recommending courses of action. You may also be involved in designing new materials or production processes, combining materials, or additive manufacturing. In addition, you may need to provide technical leadership in the design and development of new material products by choosing the correct materials and applications through data derived from analysis in the field or lab. On completion of the materials science technologist apprenticeship, you’ll achieve a bachelor’s degree in materials.

 

Duration: 48 months

Relevant school subjects: DT and science

Entry requirements for the materials science technologist apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely A-levels or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Degree)—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree

Potential salary upon completion: £29,000 per annum
