Operate, monitor and control the nuclear reactor and its equipment in normal and abnormal conditions
Reactor desk engineers are based within the main control room of a nuclear power station environment or the defence sector manoeuvring room in a nuclear submarine environment. The demand for this role is increasing with the advent of new nuclear build and developing technologies. The broad purpose of your role will be to operate, monitor and control the nuclear reactor and associated equipment in normal operational modes, as well as abnormal conditions, such as system failures, security threats, fire or external events. During the nuclear reactor desk engineer apprenticeship you’ll be the human interface between the reactor and the personnel working with the systems. You’ll start up and shut down the nuclear reactor, observe system trends, control and monitor operations and decide upon appropriate corrective action. You’ll have a good understanding of complex engineering procedures and with a professional attitude you’ll be able to interact with people at all levels in the organisation and also operate under pressure.
Duration: 30 months

Entry requirements for the nuclear reactor desk engineer apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely HNC in an engineering subject or equivalent qualifications or experience
Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Higher)—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree
Potential salary upon completion: £33,000
