Work as a machine operator or an assistant in the overall papermaking process, converting raw materials into paper products
A papermaker operates machinery, individually and as part of a team, to convert raw materials to paper products in an operator or assistant role in the process for pulping, drying, reeling, coating, basic maintenance and quality control testing. Working with minimum supervision, you’ll develop knowledge of the entire papermaking process over the course of the papermaker apprenticeship. You’ll be able to work at a range of manufacturing organisations within the newspaper, office paper, packaging and board, tissue, speciality, security, medical, currency and tea bag sectors. Paper can be made from a variety of natural fibres such as soft and hard woods, abaca, bagasse, cotton and esparto. As a papermaker, you’ll learn to manufacture the product from these and other raw materials using a variety of equipment.
Duration: 36 months
Relevant school subjects: Science and ICT
Entry requirements for the papermaker apprenticeship: GCSEs, including maths, English, ICT and a relevant science, or equivalent
Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels at grades
Potential salary upon completion: £22,000 per annum
