During the rail and rail systems senior engineer apprenticeship you’ll take on an operational leadership role, responsible for people and the work within a conventional or high-speed railway context. As an apprentice, you’ll develop expertise in rail civils; rail track; signalling and control; systems and integration; traction and rolling stock; telecoms; network and digital; or electrical, mechanical or building services. You’ll learn to lead people or processes in one of these areas, in tasks such as managing integrated safe design, construction, installation, maintenance, renewal, or decommissioning. Your work will require a deep knowledge and understanding of how the railway works as an integrated, complex system from an operational perspective. Activities in your daily work could include developing work proposals, managing activities, identifying solutions to problems and assessing and managing any risks. You may be working in a technical office, remotely or at railway worksites. On completion, you’ll achieve a bachelor’s degree, most likely in engineering.

Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Degree)—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree
