Scenic automation technician apprenticeship

Help bring stage productions to life through automation and movement

As a scenic automation technician apprentice, you’ll learn how to set up, operate, and maintain automated systems used in live theatre, film, TV, and events. These systems control moving parts on stage—like scenery, lighting rigs, or props—to create smooth, safe, and impressive performances.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with motors, winches, control software, and safety systems. You’ll learn how to build and test automation equipment, work from technical drawings, and support rehearsals and live shows.

This is a technical role that requires problem-solving, strong communication skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. You’ll often work as part of a backstage team in fast-paced environments with tight deadlines.

With experience, you could progress to senior technician roles, specialise in automation design, or work in major theatres, touring productions, or global entertainment venues.
