Safely design and construct bespoke scenic elements.
As a scenic construction technician apprentice, you’ll work in various settings like theatres, live events, film and TV productions, and commercial workshops, creating custom scenic elements. You may also work in conference venues, theme parks, and exhibitions. Your main role during a scenic construction technician apprenticeship will be safely designing and building scenic elements such as walls, platforms, doors, and stairs using carpentry, metal fabrication, and drafting skills. Your tasks will include pre-fitting components, assembling scenic elements onsite, and collaborating with other departments like stage crews and lighting teams. You’ll also handle repairs, maintain tools, and communicate with designers and clients. During your apprenticeship you’ll learn how to interpret complex construction drawings and models to achieve the designer’s vision, adapting under pressure where needed, and ensuring quality and adhering to safety and environmental regulations. You can expect to work evenings and weekends during production periods, and you should be comfortable working at heights or in confined spaces.
