Specialist teaching assistant apprenticeship

Support pupils with additional needs to achieve their full potential

As a specialist teaching assistant apprentice, you’ll learn how to support children and young people with a range of additional or complex needs in schools and other educational settings. This might include working with pupils with learning difficulties, disabilities, sensory impairments, or behavioural challenges.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop skills in delivering targeted support, adapting learning materials, monitoring progress, and helping students become more independent. You’ll work closely with teachers, therapists, and families to make sure each pupil receives the care and attention they need.

You’ll need patience, empathy, strong communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships. This is a rewarding role where you’ll make a real difference to young people’s lives.

With experience, you could progress into higher-level teaching assistant roles, specialist support positions, or train to become a qualified teacher.
