Apply an understanding of cyber security to protect from attacks and unauthorised access
Fighting cyber security threats is a multi-million-pound industry, and one that continues to grow as threats from the likes of malware, ransomware, phishing and hacking increase. Organisations turn to cyber security professionals to help keep their company data, websites and customer details safe. As a cyber security technologist, you’ll be part of the response to attacks on businesses. Some of your tasks will be very technical, others may be more analytical or user focused. At the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll be competent to be employed as one of the following: Cyber security engineer, designing, building and testing secure networks with a focus on the security aspects; cyber risk analyst, focusing on risk assessment, analysis and giving advice; or, cyber defender and responder, which is more operationally focused, and you’ll configure and operate secure systems to prevent security breaches. Your daily work will include interaction with a range of people and specialists and you’ll typically work in an office or lab-based. You’ll be responsible for your own work and may be required to supervise, work with budgets and other staff. You’ll need to be logical and analytical and be able to communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Duration: 24 months
Relevant school subjects: Maths, English and ICT
Entry requirements: A-levels, a relevant level 3 apprenticeship, or other relevant qualifications, or relevant experience and/or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths
Achievement upon completion: Level 4 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree
Potential salary upon completion: £25,000 per annum
