“Instructing and directing people through a variety of exercise and fitness activities that help them to lose weight, get fit and generally become healthier”

Health and fitness instructors work with all kinds of people to put together personal health plans, lead exercise classes and induct new members into the gym. As a fitness or gym instructor, you’ll cover reception, plan and deliver sessions for members, and sell memberships. As an exercise instructor, you’ll prepare, deliver and evaluate classes in aerobics, step aerobics, circuit training or aqua aerobics. Depending on your employer, you’ll also help with other more general tasks. Upon completion of the intermediate apprenticeship, you’ll be able to progress onto a specialist role such as teaching exercise to children. The advanced apprenticeship focuses on more specialist and technical personal training. All of the fitness-related qualifications that can be achieved through this apprenticeship will allow you entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals.
