Job application overload: 86% of job applications go ‘ignored’

Job applications being ignored: most candidates don’t hear back

A new survey from global talent company Robert Walters shows that 86% of jobseekers feel like their applications are being ignored. Many are turning to AI to help – with 54% saying they now use AI tools to write their CVs or cover letters.

As the number of applications rises, hiring managers are struggling to keep up. This is causing delays and making it harder for applicants to get a response.

Too many applications, not enough replies

Jobseekers are sending out lots of applications – 29% apply for more than 20 jobs every week. But 58% say they won’t apply for a job if the process takes too long. To save time, 45% say they use AI, and nearly 1 in 5 use it regularly.

However, 73% of hiring managers say they can tell when a CV was written by AI, mostly because the writing sounds too generic or the format is too perfect. 35% of managers say this gives them a negative view of the candidate.

70% of hiring managers have seen a rise in applications, and 57% say this has slowed down the hiring process. Many applicants don’t meet the basic job requirements, which wastes time.

The top reason for rejecting applicants is a lack of relevant experience – 62% of hiring managers say this is the main problem. Some employers still check applications by hand, but with so many coming in, even qualified people can get missed.

Chris Eldridge, CEO of Robert Walters UK&I, explains, “While AI can be helpful for quick applications, hiring managers value authenticity and a true reflection of a candidate’s experience. Many professionals believe tailoring their CV with AI improves their chances, but employers can often spot the language or overly polished formatting, which can actually work against them.”

More candidates ‘ghosting’ during the process

Another issue is people disappearing during the hiring process – a trend known as ‘ghosting’. According to the survey, some candidates stop replying or don’t show up for interviews.

Chris adds: “This mass outreach can result in candidates missing key details of job postings or failing to tailor their applications to the role. In turn, employers are seeing a higher rate of applications that miss key experience or skills requirements.”

He also warns that AI might be part of the problem. The report shows that as more people use AI, more are also ghosting employers.

Chris comments: “To improve candidate engagement and reduce ghosting, organisations should focus on creating a positive and transparent interview experience. This involves maintaining open communication throughout the process, providing timely feedback, and addressing any candidate concerns promptly.

“Additionally, emphasising company culture, values, and career opportunities can help attract and retain motivated candidates who are committed to the organisation’s long-term success.”
