An accounts or finance assistant is an integral part of the team responsible for maintaining an efficient and accurate finance function within a business. You’ll be responsible for assisting a team of accountants with junior accounting duties, which can vary massively depending on the team structure and size of business.
As an accounts assistant, you can work in almost any sector. Potential employers could include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, the public sector, not-for-profit organisations and educational institutions.
You could work in-house for an organisation or for an accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, or self-employed on behalf of several different clients.
Core duties could include:
- Basic bookkeeping.
- Working with sales and purchase ledgers.
- Ensure records and payments are correct.
- Recording cash.
- Data entry.

Duration: 12 months
Relevant school subjects: Maths, ICT
Entry requirements: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience.
Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate) – equivalent to GCSEs
Potential salary upon completion: £19,000
