HFW: Mohammad Malik

Mohammad explains the reasons for choosing to to start an apprenticeship with HFW instead of going to university:

“What initially attracted me to HFW was the high-quality work. As a sector-focussed firm, the highly specialised lawyers are unique in their ability to provide exceptional client service, which (as I was a freelancer at the time) mattered dearly to me. After having looked further, a guaranteed international secondment in one of HFW’s offices was of great appeal to me, as someone who hasn’t experienced living abroad.

So far, I have worked on several projects. From working on client pitches to helping in the preparation and hosting of client events, I have been highly engaged without needing to sacrifice work-life balance. My highlight to date is working on a pitch for a major airline.

I have picked up and improved essential skills from my apprenticeship, such as attention-to-detail, organisation and written communication as well as client-interaction and interpersonal skills. I have also acquired a wealth of experience particularly in the Marketing & Business Development sphere, making me well-equipped for my future career where business development will be integral. My apprenticeship has also provided me with the opportunity to improve my confidence in public speaking.

I chose the apprenticeship route over university for several reasons. Not having any student loans to repay was a key reason, as a Muslim seeking to avoid prohibited additional interest. The practical benefits to the solicitor apprenticeship route were also critical factors in my choice. As a six-year programme, I will have more time to rotate around the business and become a well-rounded legal practitioner, come time for qualification. As well as this, I will be more likely to find an area of law that truly suits my interests. Also, at a firm with such brilliant minds, the mentorship I will receive over the years will be invaluable to my professional development.”
