Making a mark in Newcastle through hairdressing
Alicia Mandizvidza is currently making a name for herself at House of Ace, a specialist salon focusing on braids, weaves, and Afro-Caribbean hair, in Newcastle City Centre.
After choosing a level 2 hair professional qualification from Kleek Apprenticeships, which she passed with distinction, Alicia is now working towards her advanced qualification. Here she shares her inspiring and practical journey:
Discovering a passion for hairdressing
Alicia’s interest in hairdressing began early. “Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to work with hair! I’ve worked with afro hair since I was little, but I want to work with all kinds of hair and help to bring communities together,” she explains. This drive has led her to seek expertise in various hair types, aiming to create a more inclusive industry.
A week in the life
Alicia’s workweek is packed. “It’s back-to-back,” she says. “I try to stick to my hours of 10am to 7pm, but I usually go over. I’m a perfectionist.” After a busy week in the salon, Alicia enjoys her visits to Kleek Academy, where she practices further skills like perming and colouring.
Proud moments and milestones
Alicia takes pride in all her accomplishments. “Just working with hair is such an achievement, but I get to work with ALL hair types, which is a rarity in the industry,” she notes. Her versatility and commitment to mastering diverse hair types highlight her dedication to inclusivity.
The apprenticeship experience
Reflecting on her apprenticeship, Alicia highlights both positive and challenging moments. “I love building relationships with my regular clients. My apprenticeship has helped me to grow in confidence so much. The training and mentorship I have received during my apprenticeship have been unbelievable,” she says. However, she recalls a mishap: “One of my first times practising my shampooing at the backwashes, I drenched an older lady. I felt terrible. Thankfully, I’ve never done it since.”
Advice for aspiring hairdressers
Alicia has practical advice for those considering a Kleek Apprenticeship: “Ask questions! Do not hold back. “I would have completed level 2 sooner if I had the confidence to ask more questions from the start.” Her journey underlines the significance of curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge.
The joy of making people feel beautiful
What does Alicia love most about her job? “I love helping people feel beautiful,” she says. Specialising in serving new mothers and the Black community, Alicia takes great pride in helping her clients love their hair and feel confident.
Future aspirations: continuous growth
Looking ahead, Alicia is focused on gaining her level 3 qualification in hairdressing. “Education never ends,” she explains, highlighting her commitment to continuous growth and excellence. At House of Ace, she continues to make a difference, one hairstyle at a time.
