Lance Corporal Mica Taylor is a communication systems engineer with the Royal Corps of Signals
Lance Corporal Taylor is training as a communication systems engineer within a high-readiness squadron. Mica’s unit, 30 Signal Regiment, is part of the Royal Corps of Signals. Fast-moving and game-changing, the Royal Signals are leaders in IT, cyber and telecommunications. They provide battle-winning communications to every part of the Army, from major headquarters to Special Forces patrols.
Mica is being trained to become an expert and everyone who trains with the Royal Signals has the opportunity to choose what they want to be an expert in. Mica’s path into training in IT and communications started after she graduated from university and wasn’t sure about what to do next. Mica had always been athletic and interested in the military—so the lure of sports and adventure combined with real qualifications with the Army was a big draw.
30 Signal Regiment was Mica’s first choice during her training, especially because she had seen them at many sporting events! But most importantly Mica was drawn to the IT skills and qualifications she would obtain in her Level 2 apprenticeship—opportunities include NVQs/SVQs, information technology, various driving licences and even a BSc degree. All of these skills and qualifications are transferable to careers outside of the Army. In addition to official qualifications, Mica points out that she has developed excellent leadership and communication skills and the experience of working under pressure.
Mica’s advice to anybody considering a career in the Army is to join, because it is a great opportunity to do things you would never otherwise have the chance to do—because no matter what role you choose, you’ll get opportunities for travel and adventure all over the world.
