Highways England: Uzma Younis

Uzma Younis, 26, is a social media apprentice at Highways England

“I joined Highways England as a social media apprentice after spending a few years at university studying computer science. I hadn’t initially planned to enter the field, but I saw the vacancy and thought it would be a really interesting role, especially being such an avid social media user myself. It’s safe to say I haven’t looked back!”

“I’m grateful for having had the opportunity to pursue both paths as I now know it’s the nature of the apprenticeship that I actually prefer. Being able to gain a qualification alongside working on real-life campaigns and delivering results that make a difference to people using our road network has been an invaluable experience.”

“I have been involved in lots of different elements of social media—from attending events and publicising them, to creating regional stories about the good work we carry out; and from building our careers channel and recruiting people, to handling and distributing our big marketing campaigns across our channels. It’s a really fun and engaging area to work in and which pulls together so many skills, such as video and photography, content writing, planning and organising, evaluation, and communication with others.”

“I work with lots of different teams across the business that have a wealth of knowledge and experience. One of the best parts of the apprenticeship is networking and learning from them all, but also being confident enough to show off your own skill-set to prove what you’re capable of. There is lots of support at Highways England, and plenty of opportunities to help steer your career in the direction you want to go. I really couldn’t recommend an apprenticeship enough.”
