RICS: Uwais Paderwala

Uwais Paderwala is a quantity surveying apprentice with Gardiner and Theobald and RICS

“I honestly think surveying is one of the most interesting industries to work in,” said Uwais. “Only in construction and the built environment can you meet so many extraordinary people from different walks of life.”

“I’d never realised surveying was a career I could do; I originally wanted to become an accountant but I have a strong interest in buildings so quantity surveying seemed perfect as it combined both in a professional career—and it’s safe to say that it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

“Joining as an apprentice meant I got my foot through the door and could start my exciting career while simultaneously gaining qualifications and valuable experience. I learn the theory and then put it into practice—which for me is the best way to learn!”

“Currently I am delivering my own projects for a major retail client which includes agreeing contracts and final accounts with main contractors. Then I’m also producing a plan for the refurbishment and conversion of an existing building into central London apartments.”

“The best part about the job is the satisfaction of seeing a concept design for a building on paper progress through to its construction and knowing that I had a key role in delivering the project.”

“My advice to those thinking about a career in surveying is to be proactive and ask a lot of questions. Whether you are starting your career or you’re a person contemplating making a career change for the third time, don’t be afraid to make the jump: this is one the most exciting and interesting industries to work in.”
