Zoha’s solicitor apprenticeship journey started almost a year ago. She reflects on her seats and experience to date.
My initial attraction to HFW was its international presence. With offices across multiple continents, the firm offers the opportunity to work on multi-jurisdictional matters, providing exposure to a diverse client base and different legal and cultural perspectives. HFW’s sector-focused approach was another key factor, with its specialisation in industries such as Shipping and Aerospace meaning the firm is involved in complex, high-profile matters and allowing for early development of industry-specific expertise.
The structure of the Solicitor Apprenticeship programme also stood out, as beginning in business services before progressing into legal seats provides a well-rounded understanding of the firm and a strong foundation of both practical and commercial experience.
I began my apprenticeship in the Global Research and Resources hub, where I developed core research skills and confidence in using legal databases. I then moved into my current seat in Insurance/Reinsurance and Aerospace Marketing & Business Development and will shortly rotate into Risk & Compliance before progressing into legal seats. To date, , I have supported on pitches, client materials, and event organisation. A key highlight has been working on the Insurance Digest, where I have contributed to producing a firm-wide publication and gained exposure to a wide range of matters across the team.
The apprenticeship has enabled me to develop both professionally and personally. I have built confidence in networking and working with colleagues, while also learning how to operate effectively in a corporate environment. I have become more responsible and aware of how my work contributes to the wider team, strengthening my collaboration skills.
Choosing the apprenticeship route was a natural decision, as it offers hands-on experience alongside academic learning. Having my studies funded while earning a salary made it an even more attractive option, as it allows me to build both my skills and financial independence at the same time, overall providing me with a head start in my career, allowing me to develop professionally while gaining real exposure to the working world.
