Bus and coach engineering technician apprenticeship

Carry out a range of engineering work on buses and coaches for their operators

During the bus and coach engineering technician apprenticeship you will inspect, diagnose, repair and test equipment and systems on buses and coaches from different manufacturers. At the point of your recruitment, you’ll select a specific trade, such as mechanical, electrical coachbuilder or mechelec (a combination of mechanical and electrical), to focus on. You’ll work on all of the systems of the vehicles in respect of your specific trade. You’ll perform simple tasks, such as replacing a part, and solve complex faults, often using diagnostic equipment. The tasks you’ll face will constantly change as vehicles become more complex with the introduction of new technologies and differing fuel types. As a technician, you’ll have to demonstrate expertise in the technical side of your role as well as having strong problem solving skills. You must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Duration: 36 months

Relevant school subjects: Science and DT

Entry requirements for the bus and coach engineering technician apprenticeship: Demonstrable interest in bus and coach industry, an ability to work in an organised and methodical way, mechanical skills, and communication skills

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £32,000 per annum
