Craft painter and decorator apprenticeship

Apply decorative finishes and protective coatings to buildings and structures

As a craft painter and decorator apprentice, you’ll learn to prepare and decorate interior and exterior surfaces to a high standard. This includes applying paints, wallpapers, stains, varnishes, and specialist coatings on a range of surfaces in both new build and renovation projects.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll develop skills in surface preparation, mixing and matching paints, using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, and working safely with different materials. You’ll also learn about colour theory, health and safety, and environmental considerations.

You’ll work indoors and outdoors, often on scaffolding or ladders, and need to be detail-focused, patient, and practical. With experience, you could specialise in heritage decoration, industrial coatings, or progress to supervisory roles.
