Design, manufacture, modify and repair custom-made dental appliances
Your work as a dental technician will be undertaken in a dental lab on a prescription from a dentist. The work can broadly be split into crown and bridge, dentures, and orthodontics. Most labs specialise in one or two of these areas, but this apprenticeship will see you develop competency across all disciplines. During the dental technician apprenticeship, you’ll tread a fine line between art and science—you’ll learn to manufacture precise custom-made medical appliances, but exhibit the attention to detail, colour and manual dexterity that is expected of fine artists. Working as part of the dental team, you’ll need to comply with professional regulation, collaborate with dental practices and occasionally meet patients. You’ll need to be able to work with minimum supervision and will be responsible for the quality of your finished work before it is released to the dentist and patient.
