Engineer surveyor apprenticeship

Undertake independent engineering inspections of a wide variety of equipment

Usually employed by inspection companies, you’ll be responsible for the inspection of millions of items of equipment every year, from eyebolts to tower cranes, coffee boilers to steam trains and electrical installations, lifts and escalators and construction equipment. The work is very much ‘hands-on’, requiring practical experience, technical ability, strong customer communication skills and the ability to make professional judgements. During the engineer surveyor apprenticeship you’ll learn all the core duties of the job and also demonstrate specialist requirements in one of the following roles: engineer surveyor—specialising in mechanical machinery such as pressure vessels, power presses and lifting equipment, or engineer surveyor—specialising in electrical machinery such as wiring, portable devices and hazardous areas such as petrol stations. A typical day could involve interacting with clients and colleagues and communicating with technical specialists for guidance relating to specific equipment. This is a very responsible job where you’ll need to maintain a high level of safety at all times.

Duration: 24 months

Entry requirements for the engineer surveyor apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but typical entry requirements for this occupation are a level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering subject and a minimum of 3 years’ experience within a relevant field of engineering.

Achievement upon completion: Level 4 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree

Potential salary upon completion: £35,000
