Engineering design and draughtsperson apprenticeship

Produce engineering designs and drawings for components, structures and systems used in industrial and commercial construction

During the engineering design and draughtsperson apprenticeship, you’ll be able to work in a wide range of industries of national importance, including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, food and drink processing. This apprenticeship will broadly train you in electrical, control and instrumentation, mechanical, piping and structural design, you’ll then go on to specialise in one area. You’ll be office-based as part of a project design team but may occasionally work at on-site locations. As a result, you’ll need to understand on-site hazards and health and safety requirements. You’ll learn to understand technical drawings and specifications, and develop the skills to create your own. You’ll also identify factors likely to affect design decisions, produce computer-aided design models and engineering drawings, and be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.

Duration: 42 months

Relevant school subjects: Maths and DT

Entry requirements for the engineering design and draughtsperson apprenticeship: Five GCSEs, including maths, English language, and a science or technical subject 

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
