Install, fabricate, maintain and decommission piping systems within engineering construction

The pipefitter is a vital engineering construction role. During the engineering construction pipefitter apprenticeship, you may work on major infrastructure projects, such as power stations and oil and gas facilities, both in the UK and overseas. Your work may be carried out in hazardous environments, including at height, over water and in confined spaces. The pipefitter role encompasses the positioning, assembly, fabrication, maintenance, repair and decommissioning of piping systems, both on construction sites and at commercial fabrication facilities. These systems include those that may carry water, steam, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, gas, hydrocarbons or fuel, which may be used in cooling, heating, lubricating and other processes. As a pipefitter, you’ll learn to work with various pipe materials, such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and composites, which all vary in diameter and thickness depending on the content of the pipes and the operating pressures of the systems.

Duration: 36 months

Relevant school subjects: Science and DT

Entry requirements for the engineering construction pipefitter apprenticeship: Three GCSEs, including English, maths and a science- or technology-based subject, or equivalent qualifications

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £33,000 per annum
