Harbour master apprenticeship

Enforce regulations and industry codes of practice in a port, harbour or marina

A port can refer to ports, harbours, jetties and marinas, and they are used for a variety of purposes including recreation, commercial trade and defence. During the harbour master apprenticeship, it will be your role to enforce regulations and industry codes as you keep in contact with ship masters, enforcement officers, stakeholders, tenants, members of the public, agents, customers, marine pilots, as well as port operations and commercial staff. You’ll hold ultimate decision-making responsibility at all times, day or night, but may delegate authority to a deputy or assistant. The harbour master has the power to permit vessels to enter or leave the port, as well as overseeing vessel traffic movement. You will also oversee the planning and execution of port marine operations such as designating where vessels should lie within the harbour and vessel traffic management services.

Entry requirements for the harbour master apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely A-levels or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Degree)—equivalent to bachelor’s degree

Potential salary upon completion: £39,000
