Metal recycling general operative apprenticeship

Identify different metals, and sort and separate them into grades

During the metal recycling general operative apprenticeship, you’ll train in a range of different tasks and responsibilities, both outside on the yard and in an office-like environment. You’ll be in charge of handling all types of equipment and will perform the many tasks undertaken in a metal recycling yard. You’ll identify different metals, sort and separate them into grades and understand the commercial impact grading has on the organisation. Other tasks could involve processing vehicles, electrical equipment and large domestic appliances. You’ll develop a knowledge and appreciation of a range of processes, site administration, and risk assessment, as well as legislation relating to metal recycling. You’ll gain the skills to operate industry-specific and generic plant and equipment, such as a forklift truck, shear and cable strippers. Safety will form a key element of your role and you’ll need a positive attitude to the working environment and any changes.
