Work in a wide range of emergency situations

As a firefighter, you’ll respond to emergency situations where problem solving and initiative are vital to resolving incidents quickly and calmly, such as tackling fires, searching, rescuing and protecting people and animals. There are 45 fire services in England, as well as organisations such as the RAF, airports, MoD, and those dealing with explosives and chemicals. Sustaining and preserving life is paramount, whether the situation is a road traffic collision or a natural disaster. When in attendance at a scene, you must adopt a sensitive approach to dealing with members of the public and casualties who may be distressed and confused. You’ll also engage with the community to provide information, advice and guidance to individuals and groups on health, safety and wellbeing. Your working day could include theoretical and practical training, along with testing and maintaining equipment to ensure operational readiness. It is essential that you’re prepared to respond at all times when on duty. During the operational firefighter apprenticeship you’ll carry out physically demanding work, at height, in enclosed spaces, and outdoors, in all weather and environmental conditions, as part of a team.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: PE

Entry requirements for the operational firefighter apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but could include geographical location, legal safeguards, and age, medical and physical fitness, including eyesight

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £30,000 per annum
