Orthoptist Apprenticeship

Diagnose and treat eye movement problems and conditions affecting vision

Working in eye healthcare, you’ll help assess, diagnose and treat conditions that affect how the eyes move and work together. Orthoptists usually work in hospitals, eye clinics or community healthcare settings as part of a wider eye care team. During the orthoptist apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to assess vision in patients of all ages, including babies, children and people with communication difficulties. In your day-to-day work, you may investigate blurred or double vision, eye movement problems, reduced vision, visual field loss or conditions linked to stroke, neurological disorders or childhood development. You could carry out eye tests, use specialist equipment, help create treatment plans, advise on eye exercises, patches, prisms or glasses, monitor long-term conditions and refer patients for further tests when needed. You’ll need to communicate clearly with patients, families, carers and other healthcare professionals, while keeping accurate records and following professional standards. This role suits someone who is caring, observant, confident with science and interested in helping people manage and improve their vision.

Potential salary upon completion: £32,000 per annum
