Responsible for a variety of perishable products, such as vegetables, fruit, cut flowers and plants
Food and plant packhouses collect and process fresh agricultural products and dispatch them to retailers, or move them to other sites for further processing. The environment is fast-paced and customer-responsive, meaning you’ll develop in a stimulating workplace, learning a variety of technical, problem-solving and supervisory skills. The packhouse line leader apprenticeship covers a key supervisory role, helping the employer to operate efficiently. You’ll be responsible for a variety of perishable products, such as vegetables, fruit, cut flowers and plants. You’ll also be responsible for a team of people and work with machinery and IT systems to achieve production targets under various time, quality, food safety and customer pressures. Successful completion of this apprenticeship will see you become a competent packhouse line leader with a strong set of supervisory skills and a solid knowledge of food and plant production line requirements.
Duration: 18 months
Relevant school subjects: Food technology
Entry requirements for the packhouse line leader apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely completion of a level 2 apprenticeship or previous experience
Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels
Potential salary upon completion: £22,000 per annum
