Complete process manufacturing activities to produce polymer products to a specification.

As a polymer processing technician apprentice, you’ll be vital in the process manufacturing sector. The polymer processing technician apprenticeship is primarily involved in creating polymer products such as plastics, nylon, PVC, and rubber. These materials are important for a number of consumer and technical uses, from clothing and water pipes to mobile phones and automotive parts. You’ll work in production facilities using sophisticated machinery and technologies like extrusion, injection moulding, and blow moulding. During the polymer processing technician apprenticeship, you’re learn to set up equipment, prepare materials, monitor processes and quality, and adjust things if they’re not quite right. You’ll also keep equipment in top condition and prepare it for overhauls. This is a collaborative role: you’ll work with other departments like maintenance laboratory, and supply chain. The polymer processing technician apprenticeship can be quite independent and you’ll be responsible for your own work quality. Plus, you’ll need to stick to health, safety, and environmental regulations, including reducing waste. 

 

Duration: 36 months 

Relevant school subjects: Science 

Entry requirements for the polymer processing technician apprenticeship: Varies by employer, but likely GCSEs in Maths and a Science-related subject. 

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels 

Potential salary upon completion: £27,000
